As a stronghold for sopapillas and all things Tex-Mex, San Antonio -- home of the Alamo -- also ranks as where chili was first sold in open-air markets by women known as "chili queens." There’s no arguing that the San Antonio dining scene is hot, hot, hot, boasting more Tex-Mex eateries and barbecue joints than anywhere else in the Lone Star state. Yet that’s not to say choices are limited, since options span from fine French cuisine to Chinese to Texas steaks and barbecue to Soul Food and Cajun. The lovely landscaped River Walk, a three-mile loop paved in stone, brims with dining enclaves of all persuasion. Inevitably, though, attention returns to Tex-Mex, a passion with San Antonio residents whatever their ethnic backgrounds. Tex-Mex stars at numerous 24-hour restaurants in case a craving for guacamole or fajitas strikes in the night. Terms to familiarize yourself with before hitting the San Antonio dining scene include queso flameado, carne asada, chili relleno, menudo, enchiladas, chalupas and sopapillas, the latter all the better when dripping in honey. The end result is not only remembering places like the Alamo Café, but remembering San Antonio as a dining stronghold worthy of repeat visits.
